Getting to know Laura Coleman from the Events Team

Tell us a little about yourself...

I absolutely love going to the theatre - whether it's a musical, comedy or ballet - I'm there. I also enjoy spend time sewing (so if there are any dress nightmares on the big day then I'm here to help).

What are the best parts of your job?

There are too many to choose from, but I do love that my job allows me to meet new people every day. You also get such a satisfaction from seeing the Bride and Groom grinning from ear to ear because you know that you have helped them to achieve their perfect day. The highlight for me has to be when guests walk into the venue for the first time and go "WOW" - it's delightful to know that they love the house and grounds just as much as I do.

Have you always wanted to work in this industry?

As hard at it is to believe, 32 years ago I went to college to study Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management. My first job was at Selsdon Park Hotel - during my time there I was promoted to Conference and Banqueting Coordinating and that was it, I was hooked!

How did you get to be at Holne Park House?

After living and working in London for many years, the scenic landscapes of Devon lured me to the countryside. When a job was advertised to cover maternity leave for the Events Manager I leapt at the chance. When my role as maternity cover was over, I was offered a permanent job, which I delightfully accepted and I am still happy to be here!

If someone wanted to do your job, what advice would you give them?

When people find out what I do for a living they nearly always respond with "you lucky thing that's a dream job"! However, 90% of my working life is dedicated to paperwork, 8% of my time is given over to social work and the rest can be applied to the fun and 'frilly' bits! My advice for any budding events co-ordinators would be to go and work alongside an events team so you can really understand the job. It's hard work and demanding but also extremely rewarding!
